Steel drawn pipes are the state in which hot-rolled steel pipes are further processed by the drawing method (cold drawing) to achieve more precise dimensions, higher strength and a smooth surface finish.

These pipes are used when high durability, precise tolerances and surface quality are required in both structural and mechanical applications. They play a critical role in nearly every sector demanding strength, precision and durability — from construction to automotive, from machine manufacturing to energy.

Steel Drawn Pipe Types

Steel drawn pipes are classified into various types according to their production methods and characteristics:

  • Precision Steel Drawn Pipes:  Manufactured via cold drawing with narrow tolerances. The surface quality is high, reducing the need for machining. They are typically used in automotive, hydraulic systems and machine parts. Standards such as EN 10305-1, EN 10305-4 and DIN 2391 apply.
  • Hydraulic Cylinder Pipes (Honed / Internally Ground):  These are pipes whose inner surface is finished by honing or grinding. They are used in the manufacture of hydraulic pistons and cylinders and require a high inner surface quality (Ra ≤ 0.3 µm).
  • Mechanical (Machine) Steel Drawn Pipes:  Used in high-strength parts (e.g., shafts, bushings, connection parts). They are produced in material grades such as ST37, ST52, E355, and commonly supplied as semi-finished material for subsequent machining.
  • Heat-Treated Steel Drawn Pipes:  These pipes are drawn from annealed, normalized or hardened steels. The heat treatment improves formability or strength. They may comply with standards such as EN 10297-1.
  • High-Pressure Pipes:  Generally used in oil, gas and steam systems. They have high pressure resistance and meet standards such as ASTM A106, A179, A213, A333.
  • Carbon and Alloy Steel Drawn Pipes:  Carbon steel pipes include quality grades like ST37, ST44, ST52, E235, E355. Alloy steel pipes include materials such as 4130, 4140, 34CrMo4, 42CrMo4—used in high-strength and special applications.
  • Automotive Pipes:  Used for chassis parts, suspension systems, seat mechanisms etc. They are preferred because of their lightweight yet strong construction, and are generally manufactured from high yield-strength steel.
  • Cold Drawn – Seamless Pipes:  They are unwelded; thanks to their seamless construction they withstand high pressures and thermal stresses. They are commonly used in gas and fluid transmission lines and in steam systems.

Providing Structural Strength: Used as load-bearing elements in buildings, steel structures, shelving systems and scaffolding. Mechanical Part Manufacturing: Employed in manufacturing shafts, bushings, sleeves, hydraulic cylinders, piston barrels, gear-box housings and similar machine parts. Systems Requiring Precise Dimensions: Thanks to the cold-drawing process, pipes with very narrow tolerances and smooth diameters are produced; this reduces machining needs. Use in Pressurised Systems: Preferred for hydraulic and pneumatic systems and the production of lines resistant to high pressure. Automotive and Defence Industry: Used in heavy-duty applications such as trucks, tractors, defence vehicles as chassis components, shaft covers or connecting elements.
